Dangote IPO vs Dangote Cement Shares: What’s the Difference?

Dangote Cement Shares: Available Right Now
Dangote Cement is a separate, already publicly listed company that has traded on the Nigerian Exchange since 2010. It’s one of Africa’s largest cement producers, with operations across multiple African countries, and its shares can be bought today through any NGX-licensed stockbroker — no waiting for a prospectus or subscription window required.
Because it’s already listed, Dangote Cement publishes regular audited financial statements, giving investors an actual, verifiable earnings and dividend track record to evaluate — something the still-private refinery cannot yet offer.
Dangote Refinery IPO: Not Yet Investable
Dangote Petroleum Refinery, by contrast, is still privately held (majority Dangote Industries, with NNPC holding a 20% stake) and cannot be bought on any exchange today. As of this writing, it has filed an IPO application with Nigeria’s SEC, but no prospectus, price, or subscription window has been published — meaning there’s currently no legal way to buy shares in the refinery, despite how much media coverage the planned deal has generated.
The two companies also have fundamentally different business models: cement manufacturing versus oil refining and petrochemicals, each with its own distinct set of risks (construction and consumer demand cycles for cement; crude oil and refined product price spreads for refining).
Key Differences for Investors
Availability: Dangote Cement — buy today. Dangote Refinery — not available until an official IPO opens. Track record: Dangote Cement has years of published, audited financial history. The refinery’s financials will only become public once a prospectus is released. Business exposure: buying Dangote Cement gives you exposure to construction materials demand across Africa; a future refinery investment would expose you to global oil and refined product markets. Separate shares: owning Dangote Cement does not give you any stake in the refinery, or vice versa once it lists — they are, and will remain, entirely separate listed securities with their own share prices and dividend policies.
If you want Dangote-linked exposure today, Dangote Cement is the only option. If you’re specifically interested in the refinery, the only responsible move right now is to prepare — broker account, documentation, funding source — while waiting for the actual IPO to open.
