Africa has approximately 29 stock exchanges and securities trading venues, although the exact number depends on whether alternative markets, commodities exchanges, and developing trading platforms are included.

According to the African Securities Exchanges Association (ASEA), its membership represents 25 exchanges covering 37 African countries.

These exchanges connect businesses with investors and help companies raise capital by issuing shares and other securities.

What Are Africa’s Major Stock Exchanges?

Africa’s best-known exchanges include the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), Nigerian Exchange (NGX), Egyptian Exchange (EGX), Casablanca Stock Exchange, Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE), and Bourse Régionale des Valeurs Mobilières (BRVM).

They differ considerably in market capitalization, trading volume, sector composition, and international accessibility.

The JSE is among Africa’s largest and most internationally connected markets. The NGX provides exposure to Nigerian banking, telecommunications, industrial, and consumer businesses.

The BRVM is unusual because it serves 8 West African countries through one regional exchange using the West African CFA franc.

Are New African Exchanges Opening?

Yes. Africa’s capital market infrastructure continues to develop.

The Ethiopian Securities Exchange began operations in 2025, introducing a new organized securities market in one of Africa’s most populous countries.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has also been pursuing initiatives to establish a domestic securities exchange.

These developments could expand opportunities for businesses to raise capital and investors to participate in local economic growth.

How Can Investors Access African Exchanges?

Access depends on the market, investor eligibility, and local regulations.

Platforms such as Daba Finance provide eligible investors with access to selected African markets.

Investors can research listed companies through the BRVM market page and NGX market page.
