How to Invest in African IPOs From Abroad

Beyond the Dangote Refinery IPO specifically, more investors abroad, diaspora Africans and international investors alike, are looking at African IPOs generally as a growing asset class. Here’s a beginner-level guide to how this typically works, useful context whether you’re evaluating Dangote or another African listing.

Step 1: Identify where the company is actually listing. African IPOs can list on a home exchange only (like the Nigerian Exchange or Nairobi Securities Exchange), on an international exchange (like London), or as a dual listing across both, each has different access requirements and investor bases.

Step 2: Find a broker that can actually service your country of residence for that specific exchange. Not every broker serves every country, and requirements differ: some exchanges and brokers are relatively diaspora-friendly with streamlined non-resident onboarding, while others are more geared toward domestic investors, requiring more documentation or workarounds for foreign applicants.

Step 3: Understand the currency exposure. Most African IPOs are denominated in the local currency of their primary listing exchange, meaning your returns as a foreign investor are affected both by the stock’s performance and by that currency’s movement against your own, a factor that’s easy to overlook when focused purely on headline growth stories.

Step 4: Check the specific country’s repatriation and foreign exchange rules. Some African markets have historically had periods of foreign exchange scarcity or delays affecting how easily foreign investors could convert and move proceeds out of the country, this is genuinely worth researching for the specific market you’re investing in, since rules and practical experience can differ.

Step 5: Understand your tax obligations both in the country where you’re investing (withholding tax on dividends, capital gains rules) and in your own country of residence.

None of this should discourage genuine interest in African IPOs; several, including Safaricom’s 2008 debut, have delivered strong long-term returns for patient investors. It just means doing the access and logistics homework before committing capital, rather than after.
