How to Invest in the Dangote IPO: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to prepare to invest in the Dangote IPO: the steps to take now, and what to expect once an official offer opens.
As of this writing, the Dangote Refinery IPO has been filed with Nigeria’s SEC but has not yet been approved, priced, or opened for subscription — so there’s no live application process to walk through today.
What we can do is lay out, in general terms, how subscribing to an NGX IPO like this typically works, so you’re prepared once (and if) an official offer opens.
Step 1: Open a stockbroking account with an NGX-licensed stockbroker. This is a prerequisite for participating in any NGX offer, including a future Dangote IPO, and it’s worth doing in advance rather than waiting until a subscription window is already open.
Step 2: Get a CSCS account set up. Your shares, once allotted, are held electronically in a Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) account, which most brokers set up as part of onboarding.
Step 3: Complete KYC (know-your-customer) requirements. This typically includes identification documents, proof of address, and other standard compliance paperwork — exact requirements vary by broker.
Step 4: Watch for the official prospectus and subscription window. Once the SEC approves the offer, the company will publish a prospectus with the price, offer size, and subscription dates. This is the only point at which “how to apply” becomes a real, actionable process rather than general preparation.
Step 5: Submit your application and payment through your broker within the subscription window, for the number of shares (subject to any minimum lot size) you want to apply for.
Step 6: Wait for allotment. If the offer is oversubscribed, shares are often allotted on a pro-rata or scaled-back basis. Successful allotments are credited to your CSCS account, and the shares begin trading on NGX at listing.
Right now, the most useful thing you can actually do is the preparation — brokerage account, CSCS account, KYC — so you’re ready to move quickly once an official subscription window opens. Be wary of anyone asking for money to “reserve” shares before that point; Nigeria’s SEC has already warned against exactly this kind of unauthorized solicitation.
