How to Invest in the Dangote IPO From Kenya

Can Kenya-based investors access the Dangote IPO? Here’s how NGX access generally works for foreign investors, and what to prepare.
If you’re based in Kenya and interested in a future Dangote Refinery IPO, the practical path runs through NGX-licensed stockbrokers, since NGX-listed offers aren’t typically sold directly through Kenyan brokers or the Nairobi Securities Exchange. As of this writing, the IPO hasn’t been priced or opened for subscription, so there’s no live application to make yet — but here’s how to think about access.
Foreign and diaspora investors generally invest in NGX offerings by opening an account with a Nigeria-licensed stockbroker that accepts non-resident clients, or through international/pan-African brokerage platforms that provide access to NGX. Requirements for opening such an account as a foreign resident typically include standard KYC documentation — valid identification (such as a passport), proof of address in Kenya, and sometimes additional compliance paperwork related to foreign investor status. Specific requirements vary by broker, so it’s worth confirming directly with your chosen broker rather than assuming a uniform process.
On funding, cross-border investors typically need a way to move money internationally to fund a Nigerian-currency-denominated subscription — commonly via international bank transfer. Whether mobile money options like M-Pesa would be usable for a Dangote IPO subscription specifically hasn’t been confirmed, since no official subscription process has been published; we cover this question in more detail separately.
On returns, Kenya-based investors should also think ahead about currency exposure (returns and any dividends would likely be denominated in Nigerian naira unless the company specifies otherwise in its prospectus) and about how proceeds could eventually be repatriated back to Kenya, which depends on Nigerian foreign exchange regulations at the time.
For now, the most useful preparation is identifying a broker that can service Kenya-based clients for NGX investments and understanding their specific onboarding requirements, so that once Dangote’s prospectus and subscription window are officially announced, you’re not starting the access process from zero.
