How to Read Major African Stock Market Indices

A stock market index measures the performance of a group of listed companies. Investors use indices to track market movements, compare portfolio returns and understand trends across financial markets.

Africa has several stock indices covering the continent’s largest exchanges, including Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, Kenya and the BRVM region.

Understanding these benchmarks helps investors determine whether individual investments are outperforming or underperforming their markets.

What Is a Stock Market Index?

An index combines the price movements of selected securities using a defined methodology.

For example, if an index rises from 20,000 points to 22,000 points, it has increased by 10%.

However, an index gain does not mean every listed company increased in value.

Many indices use market capitalization weighting, meaning larger companies have a greater influence on overall index performance.

Others use free-float adjustments or alternative weighting methods.

Nigeria’s NGX All-Share Index

The NGX All-Share Index is Nigeria’s principal equity benchmark.

As of October 16, 2026, it closed at 247,539.73 points.

The index provides insight into the performance of Nigerian-listed equities, including businesses in banking, telecommunications, consumer goods and manufacturing.

Investors can research NGX companies through Daba Capital Markets.

South Africa’s JSE Top 40

The FTSE/JSE Top 40 tracks leading listed securities on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

The benchmark includes exposure to major sectors such as banking, mining, retail and technology-related investment businesses.

The JSE’s international corporate exposure means global economic developments can influence its performance.

Egypt, Kenya and the BRVM

Egypt’s EGX30 measures selected leading securities on the Egyptian Exchange.

Kenya’s NSE 20 Share Index follows 20 companies, while its broader All Share Index tracks a larger group of listed equities.

The BRVM Composite measures the performance of the regional West African stock market.

Investors can research companies such as Sonatel when evaluating BRVM-listed securities.

How Should Investors Use Indices?

Indices provide benchmarks for measuring performance.

If your portfolio increases 12% while the relevant index gains 18%, your portfolio has underperformed by 6 percentage points before adjusting for risk, fees or dividends.

However, comparisons should use the same measurement period and currency.

Investors should also distinguish between price indices and total-return indices, which account for reinvested dividends.

Daba Pro offers investment research and market analysis to support these comparisons.

The bottom line: African stock market indices are essential tools for understanding market performance. Investors should examine how each benchmark is constructed before using it to evaluate investment returns.
