How to Repatriate Investment Proceeds From Nigeria

A practical concern for diaspora and foreign investors considering NGX shares, including a future Dangote IPO, is whether you’ll actually be able to move your money back out of Nigeria if and when you want to, not just whether you can invest in the first place.

In principle, Nigeria’s foreign exchange regulations generally allow foreign investors to repatriate capital and returns (dividends, sale proceeds) out of the country, provided the original investment was brought in through officially recognized channels and properly documented at the time, commonly evidenced by a Certificate of Capital Importation (CCI), which Nigerian banks issue when foreign currency is brought into the country for investment purposes. Keeping this documentation from your original investment is genuinely important, since it’s typically what supports your ability to repatriate proceeds later without complications.

In practice, Nigeria has, at various points in recent years, experienced periods of foreign exchange scarcity that made timely repatriation more difficult for some investors across various sectors, a well-documented feature of the market’s history that’s worth being realistic about, rather than assuming the formal policy always translates smoothly into practice. Conditions can and do change with Nigeria’s broader foreign exchange policy, which has seen significant reform efforts in recent years aimed at improving liquidity and predictability.

For a future Dangote IPO specifically, no offer-specific guidance on repatriation has been published, since no prospectus exists yet; general Nigerian foreign exchange and capital repatriation rules would apply, the same as for any other NGX investment made by a foreign investor.

The practical takeaways: bring investment funds in through proper, documented channels (working with your broker to ensure this is done correctly) from day one, keep your CCI or equivalent documentation safe, and go in with a realistic understanding that while repatriation is legally provided for, it has not always been frictionless in practice, a factor worth weighing alongside the investment’s potential upside.
