Inside the Dangote Refinery: The World’s Largest Single-Train Plant

Dangote Refinery Capacity: 650,000 Barrels a Day, Confirmed
Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals FZE, built in the Lekki Free Zone, Lagos, is widely described as the world’s largest single-train refinery, with a designed processing capacity of 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The company said in February 2026 that it had reached this full designed capacity, following a ramp-up that began with commissioning in May 2023 and initial crude processing in January 2024.
A 2026 Windfall: Europe’s Largest Jet Fuel Supplier
The refinery’s commercial position strengthened notably in 2026. Disruption in global oil markets linked to the Iran war pushed buyers toward alternative fuel sources, and Dangote’s refinery became Europe’s largest supplier of jet fuel in June and July 2026, according to CEO David Bird, selling into markets across Africa and western Europe. Bird has said the refinery compares favorably with U.S. refining assets because of its access to local crude supplies, strong domestic demand, and integrated operations — context that’s shaped how investors and advisers are thinking about the business heading into its IPO.
The Road to 1.4 Million Barrels Per Day
In October 2025, Dangote signed an agreement with its technology licensor to begin expanding the refinery’s capacity from 650,000 to 1.4 million barrels per day within roughly three years — a move that, if completed, would make it the world’s largest refinery outright, surpassing India’s Reliance Jamnagar complex (1.36 million bpd). Dangote has said the expansion would cost substantially less than the original refinery’s roughly $20 billion price tag, since much of the necessary port, pipeline, and land infrastructure is already in place. The expansion is expected to be funded partly through IPO proceeds and partly through debt — including a $4 billion syndicated loan signed in March 2026 involving 31 lenders, with Afreximbank underwriting $2.5 billion of it alongside Access Bank, Standard Chartered, MUFG, and Mashreqbank.
What This Means for the IPO Investment Case
For investors, the combination of confirmed full-capacity operation, a real 2026 export windfall, and a funded (if debt-heavy) expansion plan gives the refinery a stronger operating narrative than it had a year ago — but it also means a meaningful share of future cash flow will be directed toward expansion and debt service rather than shareholder distributions in the near term.
It’s also worth understanding that full-capacity claims for large industrial plants can sometimes refer to a specific measurement period rather than sustained year-round performance — a distinction that should become clearer once the company’s audited operating data is published in its prospectus, expected around September 2026.
