NGX Explained: Where the Dangote IPO Would List

What Is NGX?
NGX (the Nigerian Exchange) is Nigeria’s main stock market, where shares of publicly listed companies — banks, telecoms, consumer goods firms, and industrial companies — are bought and sold electronically through licensed stockbrokers. It grew out of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, which restructured into a group holding structure (NGX Group, with NGX Exchange as the trading venue) in 2021. As of early August 2026, the total market capitalization of NGX’s main index stood at roughly $116 billion.
Why NGX, and Not London, for the Dangote IPO
Dangote Petroleum Refinery has confirmed its primary — and for now, only — listing will be on the NGX. CEO David Bird told Reuters in August 2026 that a foreign listing, potentially in London, is at least three years away, explaining that the company wants at least three years of proven production and audited financial performance before pursuing an overseas venue, which it believes would support a stronger eventual valuation. “We really want to drive participation,” Bird said. “The mandate of the IPO was to be the people’s IPO.” A separate Reuters source in August 2026 added that a cross-listing or dual listing on other African exchanges “is not planned at this stage,” even though Dangote representatives reportedly met with leadership from South Africa’s JSE, Ghana’s GSE, Kenya’s NSE, and other regional exchanges earlier in 2026 to discuss future interest.
What an NGX-Only Listing Means for the Deal’s Scale
A targeted raise of up to $5 billion would be enormous relative to NGX’s size — equivalent to roughly 4% of the entire exchange’s current market capitalization added in a single listing. For context, MTN Nigeria’s 2019 debut, the previous benchmark for a large NGX listing, added an estimated $876 million in market value at the time. A Dangote listing at anywhere near its targeted scale would meaningfully deepen NGX’s total market depth, liquidity, and international visibility — which is part of why the deal is being watched so closely, well beyond the pool of investors specifically interested in Dangote shares themselves.
It is also worth noting that NGX itself has been undergoing its own modernization push in 2026 — including reforms aimed at improving settlement speed and attracting foreign portfolio flows — which forms part of the backdrop the SEC and NGX are weighing as they review an offer of this size. A listing of Dangote’s reported scale would be, in effect, a live stress test of how far that modernization has actually progressed.
Investors evaluating whether to open an NGX brokerage account now, ahead of any Dangote subscription window, might also find it useful to look at how the exchange has handled other large recent listings and capital raises, since operational readiness — not just headline appetite — will shape how smoothly a deal of this size is actually processed.
