The Nigerian Diaspora and the Dangote IPO: What You Need to Know

The Nigerian diaspora, spread across the UK, US, Canada, the Gulf, and beyond, represents a significant pool of potential interest in the Dangote Refinery IPO, both for financial reasons and as a chance to invest in a landmark Nigerian company from abroad. Here’s a consolidated look at what diaspora investors specifically need to know.

Access: As of this writing, the IPO has been filed with Nigeria’s SEC but hasn’t been priced or opened for subscription. When it does open, diaspora investors will generally need an NGX-licensed stockbroker that accepts non-resident or foreign clients, either a Nigerian brokerage with a diaspora-focused offering, or an international platform with NGX market access.

Documentation: Requirements vary by broker but typically include a valid international passport, proof of address in your country of residence, and standard KYC compliance paperwork. Whether you need a Nigerian BVN or bank account depends on the specific broker; some diaspora-focused brokers are built specifically to avoid requiring either, using alternative verification instead.

Currency: Any offer would be naira-denominated, meaning diaspora investors take on naira/home-currency exchange rate exposure on top of the investment itself, both when investing and later when repatriating any returns or dividends.

Tax: Nigeria applies a standard 10% withholding tax on dividends (potentially reduced to 7.5% for residents of certain treaty countries), and you’ll separately need to understand your own home country’s tax treatment of foreign investment income, worth confirming with a tax adviser rather than assuming.

Repatriation: Whether and how easily you can move investment proceeds back out of Nigeria depends on prevailing Nigerian foreign exchange regulations at the time you want to withdraw, a topic covered in more detail separately, since rules and practical experience can differ from the formal policy on paper.

The most useful step for diaspora investors right now is doing the groundwork, choosing a broker, gathering documents, and understanding the tax and currency picture, so you’re ready to act quickly once an official Dangote subscription window opens.
