What Are the Risks of Investing in the Dangote IPO?

Short Answer

The main risks fall into a few categories: oil price and refining margin volatility, single-asset concentration (the business depends heavily on one facility), naira currency risk for foreign investors, Nigerian regulatory and policy risk, valuation uncertainty since no audited financials are public yet, liquidity risk typical of newly listed large-cap shares, and general execution/timeline risk common to any big IPO.

Why These Risks Matter More Than Headlines Suggest

It’s easy for excitement about a record-setting IPO to overshadow the fact that this is still, fundamentally, a single-asset industrial investment exposed to volatile global commodity markets. Refining margins (the spread between crude costs and product prices) can compress even when oil prices rise, and a facility-level disruption has an outsized impact compared to a diversified company with multiple revenue streams.

Currency risk is also worth taking seriously for anyone investing from outside Nigeria: naira volatility against major currencies has been significant in recent years, and it directly affects real, converted returns regardless of how the underlying shares perform.

How to Actually Weigh These Risks

The most useful step is reading the company’s own risk factors section once its prospectus is published, since that document is legally required to disclose the risks the company itself considers material — a far more reliable source than general commentary, including this one, written before that document exists.
