The African Securities Exchanges Association (ASEA) is an organization that brings together securities exchanges and financial market institutions across Africa.

Its mission is to support capital market development, encourage cooperation between exchanges and promote investment in African financial markets.

Founded in 1993, ASEA has become an important organization for exchanges seeking to improve infrastructure, market accessibility and regional integration.

What Does ASEA Do?

ASEA works to strengthen African securities markets through collaboration, information sharing and market development initiatives.

Its activities include promoting financial market integration, improving capital market visibility and supporting professional development.

The organization also cooperates with development institutions and financial regulators on initiatives intended to attract investment and improve market efficiency.

Although ASEA supports African exchanges, it does not operate as a retail stockbroker.

How Many Members Does ASEA Have?

ASEA’s membership directory reports 32 members, comprising 26 full members and 6 associate members.

Its membership includes major exchanges such as the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, Nigerian Exchange, Egyptian Exchange, Casablanca Stock Exchange, Nairobi Securities Exchange and BRVM.

Other members represent smaller or developing securities markets.

Associate members include organizations involved in financial education, capital market development and professional services.

Membership figures should not be interpreted as an exact count of Africa’s operating stock exchanges because categories include financial market infrastructure providers.

Why Is ASEA Important?

African financial markets operate under different rules, currencies and trading systems.

For example, a securities transaction in Nigeria may require different account registration and settlement procedures from a transaction in Kenya or Côte d’Ivoire.

These differences can complicate cross-border investment.

ASEA promotes cooperation that may help reduce operational barriers and improve information sharing between exchanges.

Over time, greater integration could support trading activity and broaden the investor base available to African companies.

What Is the African Exchanges Linkage Project?

One of ASEA’s major initiatives is the African Exchanges Linkage Project, developed with the African Development Bank.

The project aims to connect participating African securities markets through trading technology and brokerage arrangements.

Its initial phase covered exchanges in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana and the BRVM region.

At the project’s 2022 trading-platform launch, these exchanges represented approximately $1.5 trillion in market capitalization.

How Does ASEA Benefit Individual Investors?

ASEA’s work may contribute to improved trading infrastructure, investor access and market transparency.

However, investors must still comply with local regulations and use appropriately licensed intermediaries.

Daba Finance provides access to selected African investment markets through its digital platform.

Investors can research listed companies through Daba Capital Markets.

The bottom line: ASEA supports the development and integration of African financial markets. Its work contributes to efforts to create better-connected, more accessible securities markets across the continent.
