If you research how to invest in any NGX-listed company, including a potential Dangote IPO, you’ll run into the acronym CSCS. Here’s what it means and why it’s relevant.

CSCS stands for Central Securities Clearing System. It’s Nigeria’s central securities depository — essentially the electronic system that holds official records of who owns what shares, and that handles the clearing and settlement of trades made on the Nigerian Exchange. Instead of receiving a paper share certificate, an investor’s shares are held electronically in a CSCS account linked to their stockbroker.

In practical terms, when you buy shares through an NGX-licensed stockbroker, you typically need a CSCS account (sometimes bundled automatically when you open a brokerage account). This account is what proves you own your shares and lets you sell them later. It’s separate from your regular bank account and separate from the brokerage account itself, though brokers usually handle the CSCS setup as part of onboarding.

For an IPO specifically, a CSCS account matters because share allotments from a public offering are typically credited electronically into your CSCS account once the offer closes and shares are allotted — there’s no physical certificate to wait for in the mail.

For diaspora investors and other people investing from abroad, opening a CSCS account is done through a Nigeria-licensed stockbroker as part of the account-opening process, and the documentation required can include standard know-your-customer (KYC) items like identification and proof of address. Exact requirements vary by broker, so it’s worth confirming directly with the brokerage you plan to use before an offer opens, rather than assuming your home-country ID will automatically suffice.

Understanding CSCS now means that when the Dangote IPO subscription window (if and when approved) opens, you won’t be learning unfamiliar infrastructure under time pressure — you’ll already understand where your shares will actually live once allotted.
