What Is the CFA Franc and Why Does It Matter for Investors?

The CFA franc is the name used for 2 currencies circulating across 14 African countries. Both maintain a fixed exchange rate against the euro, but they are issued by different central banks and operate in separate monetary unions.

Understanding the CFA franc is particularly important for investors interested in the BRVM, the regional securities exchange serving 8 West African countries.

Which Countries Use the CFA Franc?

The West African CFA franc (XOF) is issued by the Central Bank of West African States, commonly known as BCEAO.

It is used by Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo.

These countries belong to the West African Economic and Monetary Union, or WAEMU.

The Central African CFA franc (XAF) is issued by the Bank of Central African States, or BEAC.

It is used in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

Although XOF and XAF have the same euro parity, they are distinct currencies.

How Does the CFA Franc Exchange Rate Work?

Both CFA francs maintain a fixed exchange rate of €1 = CFA 655.957.

For example, €1,000 is equivalent to CFA 655,957 before conversion fees.

This fixed relationship provides exchange-rate stability relative to the euro.

However, the CFA franc’s value against the US dollar changes when the euro-dollar exchange rate moves.

Therefore, an American investor buying CFA-denominated securities still faces currency risk.

Why Does the CFA Franc Matter for Investors?

The West African CFA franc supports financial integration across the 8 WAEMU countries.

Businesses in these economies can issue securities in a common currency, and investors can purchase listed shares without having to convert between separate national currencies.

This simplifies financial transactions within the monetary union.

However, currency stability does not guarantee investment profitability.

Corporate earnings, inflation, market liquidity and valuation remain important.

How Does the CFA Franc Relate to the BRVM?

The BRVM is a regional exchange headquartered in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Its listed companies include telecommunications operators, banks, agricultural businesses and industrial companies.

Examples include Sonatel, Orange Côte d’Ivoire and Bank of Africa Côte d’Ivoire.

As of October 16, 2026, the BRVM had a market capitalization of approximately $35.91 billion, making it Africa’s sixth-largest exchange in the supplied ranking.

What Risks Should Investors Consider?

The euro peg does not protect investors against company-specific losses, political developments or low trading liquidity.

Changes in the euro’s international value can also influence export competitiveness and dollar-denominated investment returns.

Investors should examine financial performance alongside the broader monetary environment.

The bottom line: The CFA franc provides a shared currency framework for 14 African countries. For BRVM investors, its fixed euro parity simplifies cross-border investment within West Africa, while financial and market risks remain.
