What is the Dangote IPO?

“The Dangote IPO” is shorthand for a planned stock market listing of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery built by Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote in the Lekki Free Zone, Lagos.

An IPO, or initial public offering, is when a private company sells shares to the public for the first time so anyone can buy a piece of it through a stock exchange — in this case, the Nigerian Exchange (NGX).

Here’s what’s actually confirmed.

The refinery itself is real and operating: it was commissioned in May 2023, began processing crude in early 2024, and the company said in February 2026 that it had reached its full designed capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

In late July/early August 2026, Dangote Petroleum Refinery formally filed an IPO application with Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), according to SEC Director-General Emomotimi Agama and multiple Nigerian business outlets. That filing is a real, verifiable step — it’s not the same as an approved offer.

What isn’t confirmed yet: an official listing date, an approved prospectus, a share price, or the exact percentage of the company being offered.

Aliko Dangote has publicly targeted a September 2026 listing, and the SEC has said it doesn’t currently expect delays, but no date has been formally approved as of this writing.

Reported valuation estimates for the refinery have ranged widely — from roughly $39 billion to $50 billion — but these are analyst and media estimates, not an official IPO valuation set by the company or its underwriters.

It’s also worth knowing that in June 2026, the SEC had to publicly order a halt to unauthorized promotional campaigns soliciting advance subscriptions before any application existed.

If you see anyone online asking you to “pre-register” or send money to secure Dangote shares, treat that as a red flag until Daba or a licensed broker confirms an official subscription window is open.

For everyday investors, the practical takeaway is simple: the deal has moved from rumor to a real regulatory process, but the specifics that actually matter for deciding whether to invest — price, size, timing — aren’t public yet.

That’s normal for this stage of an IPO. The next concrete milestone to watch is SEC approval of a prospectus, which is when real numbers start to appear.
