Which African Stock Exchange Had the Highest Returns in 2025?

The Malawi Stock Exchange was Africa’s best-performing stock market in 2025, with its benchmark All-Share Index rising approximately 247.6% in local-currency terms.

The performance placed Malawi ahead of several larger and more internationally prominent African equity markets.

According to year-end market comparisons, Ghana, Zambia, Nigeria, and Kenya also recorded substantial gains during 2025.

However, exceptionally strong returns do not necessarily mean a market is accessible, liquid, or suitable for every investor.

African Stock Market Returns in 2025

The following table compares selected benchmark equity indices in local-currency terms.

MarketApprox. 2025 return
Malawi+247.6%
Ghana+79.3%
Zambia+67.9%
Nigeria+51.2%
Kenya+51.1%
Egypt+40.2%
South Africa+37.7%
Morocco+27.6%
BRVM / WAEMU+25.3%

Why Did Malawi’s Stock Market Rise So Much?

Malawi’s 2025 market performance was extraordinary by international standards.

The Malawi All-Share Index increased from approximately 173,898 points at the end of 2024 to 598,063 at the end of 2025.

The increase reflected substantial gains in listed companies within a relatively small equity market.

However, the performance occurred alongside major macroeconomic challenges, including inflation, foreign exchange constraints, and limited market liquidity.

In smaller stock exchanges, concentrated ownership and relatively limited trading activity can contribute to large changes in benchmark indices.

That makes it important to distinguish between a market’s reported index performance and the returns an investor could actually realize after execution costs and currency conversion.

Ghana Was Another Standout Performer

Ghana’s stock market delivered approximately 79% in local-currency terms in 2025.

Its performance was supported by substantial gains in banking, telecommunications, and other listed companies.

The Ghanaian cedi’s movement against the US dollar also influenced returns measured by international investors.

According to Ghana’s Information Services Department, Ghana’s market gained approximately 154% in US-dollar terms in 2025, using the government’s reported methodology.

This illustrates why currency adjustments matter when comparing African stock market returns.

Nigeria and Kenya Also Recorded Strong Gains

Nigeria’s NGX All-Share Index advanced by approximately 51.2% in 2025.

Banking, industrial, and other listed companies contributed to market performance.

Kenya’s Nairobi Securities Exchange also benefited from a substantial rebound, recording gains of approximately 51% in local-currency terms.

These returns demonstrate that strong African market performance was not limited to a single country.

How Did the BRVM Perform?

The BRVM, serving eight WAEMU countries, also recorded a positive year.

Comparative year-end data indicates gains of approximately 25.3% for its composite benchmark in 2025.

The market includes companies from sectors such as banking, telecommunications, consumer goods, and agriculture.

Does the Best-Performing Market Make the Best Investment?

Not necessarily.

The highest-performing market in one year may face substantial corrections the following year.

Investors must also consider whether stocks can be purchased and sold efficiently, whether currency is available for international transfers, and whether company valuations remain attractive.

For example, a 40% gain in local currency accompanied by a 30% currency depreciation translates to approximately a 2% gain in the investor’s foreign currency before fees.

What Should Investors Watch Going Forward?

Investors should monitor company earnings, inflation, interest rates, currency stability, dividends, and market liquidity.

Daba Pro provides market research to support company-level analysis and investment decisions.

The bottom line: Malawi was Africa’s best-performing stock market in 2025 by local-currency benchmark appreciation, followed by strong gains in Ghana and Zambia. Historical returns provide context, but investment decisions should be based on future fundamentals rather than last year’s rankings.
